Although restitution is currently an important topic,
it certainly isn't a new issue.
The topic was heavily debated on multiple fronts back in the 1970s and 1980s.
Dr. Anna Valeska Strugalla has written her dissertation on this topic: “Museen und Restitution. Postkoloniale Rückgabeforderungen in Westdeutschland seit 1973” (engl. Museums and Restitution. Postcolonial Restitution claims in West Germany since 1973"), erschienen 2024.
